Can You Caulk Over Old Caulk?

By Caulk Control · Published

Short answer

No, not in a tub or shower. New silicone won't bond to cured silicone, and any new bead over old caulk traps moisture and mould between the layers. Remove the old caulk completely and clean the joint before applying a new bead.

Why it fails

Silicone is built to resist sticking, which is what makes it good in a wet room and bad as a base for more caulk. A new bead laid over an old one sits on top without bonding. Water works in at the edges and stays there, and the gap between the layers makes a dark, damp place for mould to grow. It also leaves a thick, lumpy line that looks worse than a clean joint.

Laying acrylic over old silicone fails faster, because acrylic grips silicone even less. Old acrylic under new silicone is no better, since the old material keeps breaking down underneath.

How to get old caulk out

Score both edges of the bead with a sharp utility knife or a caulk tool, holding the blade flat to avoid gouging an acrylic tub. Pull the bead out in strips. A plastic scraper removes most of what's left, and a remover gel softens anything stubborn, usually after a couple of hours of contact. Follow the directions on the product.

The film left behind matters as much as the bead. New silicone needs a clean surface, so wipe the joint with isopropyl alcohol or mineral spirits as the sealant maker directs, on a surface that won't be damaged by it, and let it dry fully. A joint that looks dry can still hold water deep in the gap, so give it time before you seal it. GE's recaulking guide walks through the same removal, cleaning and drying steps.

When to hand it off

Removal is where most DIY jobs go sideways: a scratched tub, a cut in a fibreglass surround, or a thin film left on the joint that lets the new bead peel in a few months. If you'd rather not spend the afternoon on it, removal is included in every Caulk Control job in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge at $225 per tub or shower plus HST, or $199 for bookings made by January 31, 2027.
