How Long Before You Can Shower After Caulking?

By Caulk Control · Published

Short answer

Wait 24 hours before new silicone caulk gets wet. Silicone cures from the outside in and a skin forms quickly, so it can feel dry long before it's ready. Cool or dry conditions can stretch the full cure to 48 hours.

Dry to the touch isn't cured

Silicone skins over within minutes to an hour, then keeps curing inward. Water that hits the bead during that window can disturb the seal or stop it bonding properly along the edges, and the failure might not show up for months. Bostik's product information says a 3/16-inch bead normally cures in 24 hours, and up to 48 hours in cooler or drier conditions.

Some tubes advertise a shorter wait before water exposure, and you should follow the label on whatever you're using. We tell every customer 24 hours because it's the number that protects the seal across different bathrooms and bead sizes. Water exposure before then isn't covered by our workmanship guarantee.

What slows it down

Thick beads take longer than thin ones, and cold rooms take longer than warm ones. Most silicone cures by drawing moisture from the air, so a very dry bathroom in a Waterloo Region January can run slower than the same bathroom in July. Keep the fan on and the door open, and leave the room at a normal temperature.

Planning around 24 hours

Book the job for a time that works around your household's showers. With a 9 AM appointment finishing around 11, you can shower again by late morning the next day. If you've got a second bathroom, you can have one done at a time and never lose the shower entirely. Empty the tub or shower ledges before the appointment, and keep kids and pets from testing the bead with a finger.

If it got wet too early

A quick splash on a bead that's several hours old usually does no harm. Standing water or a full shower in the first few hours is a different matter. If the bead has gone cloudy, lumpy or lifted at an edge, it needs to be removed and redone. A new bead placed on top won't bond to it.
